Life, Society and Drugs (HLTH-1050)

                                                       Application Paper

To apply what I learned in this health class in my life I thought I would need to explain the things I have learned in this class a little more thorough. I remember trying to decide on classes to take for my general studies associates degree; I knew I needed to take an online class.  The class labeled life, society and drugs stood out to me a little because I was raised LDS and I never really ever used, abused or really thought of drug use.  Second I thought I already needed to have a background on drugs, which I don’t.  I am sometimes embarrassed for not knowing anything about alcohol, when others around me know so much.  I remember even the LDS person Ken Jennings who has the record for most jeopardy victories in a row at 75 swept the mixing drink category. So to say I have learned a lot in this class is an understatement; I have learned so much in this class that I will use in my life.

The only background I really have when dealing with drugs in my life is when I used to be in construction.  When I was an electrician I volunteered to take my bosses son every morning to go to the methadone clinic to get his dosage before work.  Working with the boss’s son (Wyatt) I was able to look back and see the signs of his relapse happening and all the different things he did that was a sign of an addict.  Also while in construction I dealt with binge drinking was tough because my crew was from out of town (when the wife’s are away the men will play) and most of the crew were up all night drinking.  The next morning my co-worker and I (the only ones getting a good night’s rest) had to work on our own to get the rest of the job finished because the rest of the crew wasn’t able to work.

Looking back I remember learning all sorts of definitions that I have always heard of but never really gotten the meaning of words like recreational drugs or drug tolerance.  Knowing these definitions will definitely me in my life because for one I’ll be able to understand the news a lot more as well even some of the dark song that are on the radio.  Drugs and alcohol have been a big influence today in pop culture in the movies and T.V. shows we watch even in the music we listen to.  There are many PSA’s that talk about some of these drugs.  Even when watching the news there are laws politicians are trying to make that effect alcohol and nicotine consumption, being able to understand different effects of these drugs will help when passing these laws.  Right now I am a school bus driver and might have to deal with drugs in one way or another.  We see effects of drugs and alcohol in our society and life whether we recognize it or not, but I can see why this class is called Life, society and drugs.
